The Fergana Valley Project

Located in the heart of Central Asia, the territory of the Fergana Valley is currenly shared by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. This three year project will produce an interdisciplinary book on the Fergana Valley's history and contemporary situation in order to assist regional governments and international agencies in creating well-informed policies that can reduce conflict and promote peaceful relations in the region. The 600-page book will be published in English and in the three national languages of the Fergana Valley. (3-year project)
Implementing the United Nations Handbook on Nonprofit Institutions in Asia

Efforts to encourage the development and recognition of the civil society sector have long been impeded by a basic lack of reliable data about these organizations. To correct this, the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies joined with the United Nations Statistics Division and an international team of statistical experts to produce a Handbook on Nonprofit Institutions in the System of National Accounts to guide national statistical offices in their treatment of nonprofit institutions in regular national economic statistics. This project promoted the implementation of the handbook in Japan and other countries in Asia. (3-year project)
