Summary

Until two months ago, most Americans had never heard of Futenma. Now the issue of relocating the Futenma Marine air station has become part of a broader discussion of the future of the U.S.-Japan alliance. Many observers point to an escalation of tension or even a crisis between the United States in Japan, but often forget to incorporate Okinawan and Japanese domestic politics into their analyses.
