Islam in Indonesia had always been portrayed
as a tolerant and moderate force. After the tragic event
of September 11, and more so after the terrorist attacks
on Bali Island on October 12, 2002, such depiction of Indonesia’s
Islam began to be questioned. Dr. Rizal Sukma will examine
Indonesia’s responses to the growing threat of terrorism – both
at the national and regional level – within the context
of the country’s domestic politics. He will attempt
to explain Indonesia’s attitudes towards the problem
before and after the Bali bombing, and discuss its role in
the war against terrorism in Southeast Asia.
