"States, Societies and Civilizations:
Interpreting September 11 for East Asia and the World"

4 April 2002

About This Seminar

Main Speaker

Dr. Amitav Acharya will examine the broader implications of September 11 and the U.S. strike on the Taliban for the security of Asia, especially East Asia. Governments in the region face a challenge in dealing with the consequences of September 11 and with their anti-terrorist policies for state-society relations. The war against terrorism is defining the concept of security and rekindling a debate about the merits of democracy vis-à-vis authoritarianism. At stake are the stability of multi-ethnic societies and the future of democratic governance in the region.
